He’s hard to tie down in his musical tastes though: growing up with prog rock in the 70s, picking up bits of folk, Breton Jazz and Klezmer on the way. He has a long standing love of middle-Eastern and Eastern European music and the scales they use. “The most exciting thing about music for me is being able to improvise with others - just to create something wonderful with other people that isthere in that moment, reflecting everything that goes on between them in that space”.
Ian has played Flute, saxophones and wind synth in various bands over the past 15 years. As well as The Message, he plays in the successful Bristol band, EastPole Orchestra www.eastpole.co.uk.

He regularly collaborates in improvised performances with multi-instrumentalist and EastPole member, Simon Leach, on Piano. He has a longstanding interest in technology and does recording and live sound engineering. His flute and sax-playing influences include Ian Anderson, Roland Kirk and Yusef Lateef, Jan Garbarek, Wesley McGoogan, Didier Malherbe, John Surman, Simon Cosgrove.
